Burns Like Stars employs a neat quiet/loud dynamic on the emotionally charged “Shattered Shell”. They go right for the heart in a myriad number of ways. A combination of industrial, dream pop, even metal helps to lend the song a distinct stately quality. Layer upon layer enters into the mix adding to its whirlwind of activity. Percussion has a physicality to it for the work goes deep into the red. By the way it comes into the fray it has a buildup to it that feels outright natural in its appearance. With the lyrics they further add to the tension and exploration of the piece, as they have a cryptic, eerie sensibility to them.
The atmosphere of the track starts up quickly, as the ambient washes have a beauty to them. From the beginning there is a hushed awe to the way that the song grows and expands. Vocals have a commanding presence, and there is a twisting, turning quality to it. Lyrically there is a narrative to it, for the words have a strong thoroughly texture to it. Over the course of the track there is such a build to the work. Quite strongly it becomes ever more consuming with its intensity. As the piece progresses it gets ever-heavier, becoming as dense as a collapsing star for the finale has a particular visceral element to it.
