Bby Blue – Friends

Defying all categorization, Bby Blue completely messes with sound on the trippy journey of “Friends”. Noise, psychedelic, R&B, hip-hop, pop, all of these filters into the fray making sure that the song can be enjoyed on multiple levels. There is no center the song constantly grows and shrinks. Multiple samples are woven in for great effect ensuring that there is a degree of pop culture flourishes about it. Full of an endless sea of distortion, their approach has similarities to the hyper pop avant-garde influences of 1000 gecs in terms of the unbridled chaos. A gleeful abandon is taken with the sound as they tear everything up, refusing to settle into any discernable groove for too long. Yet, they have a catchy yet mysterious melody that seemingly wafts on through in a rather cryptic fashion.

Right from the first moment there is a rumbling physicality to the sound. Honestly this open is perhaps the most settled, minimal approach of the piece for it only grows from there. Dollops of distortion are laid thick into the rather brief piece, as they manage to accomplish quite a bit within this short time frame. Beats hit with an emotional cadence, as adherence to any sort of rhythm is completely disregarded. Everything about it feels as if it is only a few moments away from complete and utter collapse, which it teases constantly.

“Friends” proves Bby Blue to be one of those truly innovative groups that pushes what the definition of “pop music” truly means.
