Pearl Diver - Give It All Away

Pearl Diver keeps it timeless and tasteful on the graceful folk musings of “Give It All Away”. A nice early spring sun seems to sprawl over the whole of the piece. The inclusion of the jazz-like groove, lean and laid-back, further adds to the song’s warm. Every instrument is treated with care for they make sure to incorporate a great deal of space into the song. His voice has a soulful caressing touch to it. Nods to the 60s folk revival appear throughout because Pearl Diver taps into that similar vein. Vashti Bunyan, Fleet Foxes, these all filter into the mix yet the sound remains distinctly his.

A hushed whispered beginning sets the tone for what follows. The drumming in particular has a mighty fine presence to it, doing more than keeping time, it adds to the sense of intimacy that adorns much of the work. Right in the center of it all are those vocals. Sung like pure poetry there is a brightness to them, one that reveals a sense of compassion and acceptance. Thanks in large part to this attitude there is a cooling down aspect to it all one that feels quite righteous. Elements of his style and the band itself refer a bit to the Sea and Cake’s polished, poised quality for there is a similar sense of casualness that runs through it.

“Give It All Away” has a breezy, airy quality to it for Pearl Diver has quite a unique classic take on folk, one that feels eternal.
